Do I have time for meditation? In our culture we believe speed and quantity are king. Our schedules are filled. Any down time is spent with internet or phones. We even give ourselves anxiety about how much or how quickly things happen. Are we doing enough? Are we on time? Are we doing it right?
Is it a good idea to be still?
Stillness lets the clutter fade away so we realize what is really important. And as you practice stillness more often, you will notice feeling more peaceful in challenging situations.
It's not about clearing your mind.
We are so accustomed to busyness that if we are sitting quietly the mind thinks something is wrong. We begin to hear things like, “check your email“ , “what’s for dinner”?, “why did she say that to me?” This is normal and the key is to recognize that these thoughts are not our true self. These are merely thoughts. Greet these thoughts by saying to yourself, “Oh that is interesting but currently this is my quiet time.”
A beginner’s meditation
Find a quiet private space to allow yourself to observe your breath for 3 minutes.
What is happening?
We are placing attention on ourselves. This is a gift. Give yourself uninterrupted time for this practice. You are giving yourself the greatest gift of all. Attention.
How do I know if I did it correctly?
Your job is to feel the stillness, there is no report card, just feel. If you take the time to place your attention on your breath and on yourself then you are doing it correctly. Period.
Am I brave enough to stop and slow down?
Your body and mind will make excuses. Don’t believe what they say. They may act like an angry child or a whiny friend. You will need to be strong and know that this practice is about seeing the excuses, worries and doubts as false. The real heart centered you will shine through in this practice.
